Serendipity #10, 2018

Annalee Schorr: "Serendipity"

Serendipity: The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.

As I created irregular shapes for this new series of plexiglas paintings, serendipity took over, with unpredictable results. The configuration of each piece dictated the geometric patterning, and the tensions of the push/pull edges forced movement in unplanned and unexpected ways. Off-kilter and sometimes optical, this series leads in new directions.

Joyce Coco Beauty Queen, 2018

Joyce Coco: "Harkening to the Past"

I had no choice.
One painting led to another.
Subject matter and design were apparent, unavoidable and immediate.

The palette is darker in this work, somber. The icons – crow, table, chair, family, lamp, the pirogue crossing to the other side, the art on the walls – are personal yet reflective of everyone’s life. The illustrated moments – a walk with the granddaughter, the appearance of an omen, the poses of those gathered for the family photo, the announcement at table – are mine and yours. As is the magic and profundity of every life lived.
