Artist Statement for Night Falls

I am interested in the cosmos as a subject matter because I think the wonder I feel when I gaze at the night sky is something I share with the rest of humanity. Its sublime beauty has entranced people across civilizations and cultures and spawned creation myths. This human connection that stretches through the conduit of a natural phenomenon is what I keep in mind while I create these pieces. I thought to myself, what if the night appeared to fall over the daylight like a curtain? How would this transition appear and how could I create it with watercolor, acrylic and colored pencil? What if the night sky grew and obscured instead of fading in and out at sunset and sunrise? What if the night sky could be poured over the daylight? Or it grew like an amoeba? If I find it enchanting and comforting will my viewer? And how can I bring that feeling to them inside an art gallery during daylight hours, thereby stretching the amount of time in the day that they could feel what the night sky stirs in them? This exhibition is my answer to those questions.

Lisa lives and works in Denver Colorado. She received her Masters of Fine Art in Printmaking from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.
