 Michael Chavez, Dana Cain and Gwen Chanzit at the Art District Best of 2009 Gala - photo by Ken Hamel/DenverArts.org The Art District on Santa Fe is in many ways a microcosm of the Denver Art scene and Dana Cain's inaugural "Art District Best Of" was a chance for the First Friday masses to recognize and celebrate the galleries and studios on Santa Fe Drive between 5th and 10th. Last week's "Awards Gala" was the culmination of a months long process that featured two tracks: public nominations and voting focused on the hoi poloi's take on the best of the best, along with an open exhibit allowing the district's painters, sculptors and photographers a chance to strut their stuff courtesy of jurors Michael Chavez (director and curator of Golden's Foothills Art Center) and Gwen Chanzit (curator of modern and contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum).
